What to do when Your Cat Has Allergy?

Allergic reactions of a lot of people may be instigated by cats, but bouts of allergy also befall on cats. Various reasons for cat allergy are detailed in this discussion. Particles, called inhalant allergens, that pervade the air are irritating to the cat’s respiratory system and may instigate asthma-like symptoms. Several cases of skin lesions and hair loss were noticed due to inhalant allergens. Dust, pollen, household cleaning agents, tobacco smoke and perfumes are also to blame for these symptoms.

Contact allergies are brought about by physical contact with materials that are perpetrators of allergy. Household cleaning agents, synthetic fibers, wool, dust and plants are some usual examples of these.

A typical occurrence in cats is flea allergies. Flea saliva, which comes from flea bites, is more irritating to mature cats than the younger ones, thus, intensifying the condition for the older ones. Just one bite can set off a great allergy spell for some cats.

Another common sensitivity of cats is food allergies. Certain foods like grains and dairy products are the most awful food allergy triggers. Meats, dyes, preservatives and other additives to cat foods and treats may also cause reactions to some cats. Food allergy sometimes may surface years after.

Some cats may also undergo drug allergies. Drug reactivity of cats is not foreseeable, thus, a careful observation is when the cat is under medication is recommended.

Sometimes, getting rid of the allergy trigger of your cat can address the problem. A veterinarian can prescribe a tasteless hypoallergenic food product until symptoms remit when he thinks that your cat has a food allergy. Antihistamines are also often used by vets to manage the symptoms. Seek a veterinarian’s advice first, before administering any antihistamine or other allergy medications to your cat.
