How Can I Calibrate My Alcohol Tester?

When you are looking to drink safely, no matter what time of year, you will find that an alcohol tester, also known as a breathalyzer, is something that you need to look into. It can tell you whether you are safe to drive or not, and in many situations it can even save lives! A breathalyzer can help you avoid situations where your judgment might be impaired and if you are someone who wants to be cautious about drinking and driving, this is something that you need to look into.

Essentially, a breathalyzer will detect the amount of alcohol in your system. Because alcohol is not digested by the body, it becomes concentrated in the mouth. With an alcohol tester, your breath is measured for the amount of alcohol that is present and that figure in turn is used to calculate how much alcohol is in your system.

Remember that if you own a breathalyzer that you should take good care of it. It is an instrument that does require a certain amount of maintenance, and calibration is an important part of that. A breathalyzer that is poorly calibrated or poorly maintained is not going to be able to do its job and its failure at a crucial time can be disastrous. Make sure that your breathalyzer is calibrated and checked for consistency. While calibration can be difficult, it is far from impossible, so see what you can do.

Your breathalyzer should be calibrated once every six months to a year. If you use it often, you will find that these tests should come more frequently. When you buy your breathalyzer, remember to see whether you can calibrate it yourself. Take a look at the different guidelines that are available and find out whether you can perform this operation yourself. Also remember that you should look for a breathalyzer that is going to be easy to use. Finding one that is high quality and easy to use is essential.

When you are looking to recalibrate your breathalyzer, remember that the company that sold it to you will do it as well. In many cases, recalibration is a service that is performed free of charge or for a nominal feel, and you can be sure that it is done right. Even if the company that sold it to you will not recalibrate it for you, there are other companies that will. Look around and see if you can find a local company that will take care of it for you; this way, you will not have to worry about shipping fees.

Also remember that there are breathalyzers out there that come with replaceable sensors. Through replacing the sensor, you are going to be able to recalibrate your breathalyzer. Remember that this is a procedure that can save your life and the lives of other drivers. Take care of your breathalyzer and make sure that it is a tool that you use routinely; this can make all the difference when you are looking at drinking and how it affects you!

A Breathalyzer’s Function Explained

In order to explain how breathalyzers function, we need to take into consideration what exactly it is they measure. Some may be familiar with the term blood alcohol level and are vaguely familiar with legal stats along the lines of 0.08 or .10 BAC. BAC refers to Blood Alcohol Concentration which refers to the notion and concept of evaporated alcohol in the breath. The formula to convert the data will center on amount of alcohol in the 2,100 ml of air a person will expel when they breathe out that is combined with the alcohol present in the blood. While a breathalyzer is used to ID the BAC or blood alcohol level, what is really being done is measuring the amount of alcohol present in the breath.

So, how does this work? Unlike most foods and liquids, alcohol is not digested by the stomach, but is instead absorbed by membranes in a person’s stomach, intestines, throat and mouth. After being absorbed, the alcohol enters the bloodstream. But instead of becoming part of the blood, it remains separate and some of it goes into the lungs. As the person breaths out, it is expelled. The ratio of evaporated alcohol in the breath from the lungs is directly related to the amount of alcohol in the blood. In a breathalyzer, breath is joined with a chemical solution and alcohol in the breath causes a chemical reaction with the fluid.

A traditional breathalyzer will always contain two distinct vials. One of the vials will separate the alcohol from the air in order to facilitate a chemical reaction. The second vial stays the same and is a subset of the photocell system. This system is one that creates an electrical field. Such electricity is what makes the needle move. The amount the operator must adjust on the knob will be determined by the amount of alcohol that is present in the air.

Larger scale, or full size breathalyzers, are used by law enforcement agencies and are generally considered reliable and accurate as evidence in court. There are also smaller scale personal models that work quite well, but may not be considered precise enough for a court of law. In either case, depending on the person, lung capacity and other factors that can affect results, slight variations in testing are accounted for, giving the person being tested a small amount of leniency.

Breathalyzers are not known to require any maintenance although making sure its supplies are in proper condition so they may continue to function. Mostly all breathalyzers employ a mouthpiece which is commonly a small tube in which the subject needs to breathe into for about 2 – 4 seconds. Such items are inexpensive and commonly easily replaced. The two vials may require an additional solution in order to be calibrated properly but this is fine. For those involved in legal proceedings with the devices, extended maintenance and proper training is needed.

Here is a summary: a breathalyzer will collect an individual’s breath when it is laced with a consistent amount of alcohol to air that is in direct correlation with the amount of alcohol found in the bloodstream that can be determined as the legal standard for intoxication. Once the air enters a single vial, a chemical reaction will occur and this will have an affect on the photo cell and electrical charge. The measurement of alcohol will then be determined by a displacement in an electrical field. This can be considered an accurate means of data collection that can create a valuable instrument designed to provide concrete and clearly determinable results.
