Mesothelioma Advice – Questions And Answers

What is mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma is cancer of the mesothelium. Like most cancers, mesothelioma involves the abnormal dividing of cells of a particular part of the body — in this case, the mesothelium. Mesothelioma is so deadly because it remains dormant for many years and in that case begins to rapidly expand. The cancer then begins to invade and damage nearby tissue, including the vital organs.

What is the mesothelium?

Many of the internal organs of the body are protected by a membrane called the mesothelium. This membrane in actual fact consists of two layers of cells. The inner layer surrounds the organs, and the second is a sac surrounding the inner layer. When organs within this membrane must move, expand or contract — just like the heart, lungs, bladder, and so on, they are able to do so mainly because the mesothelium produces a lubricating fluid between the two layers.

Mesothelioma most of the time begins within the pleura or peritoneum. The pleura surrounds the lungs and covers the chest cavity. The peritoneum covers most of the organs within the abdominal cavity. Other mesothelium tissue is also vulnerable to mesothelioma. These include the pericardium that surrounds and protects the heart; the tunica vaginalis testic which surrounds the internal male reproductive organs; and the tunica serosa uteri which is the membrane covering the internal reproductive organs in ladies.

Who is at greatest risk to develop mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma has a really specific cause – exposure to asbestos. During the first half of the previous century, right up until the mid 1970s asbestos was an crucial material used to insulate buildings, machines, heavy equipment, and a broad range of commercial applications. Simply because it was plentiful and low-cost to mine, asbestos was used in many building products such as home insulation, floor, ceiling and roof tiles. It was also used in commonly found commercial products just like brake linings and pipe insulation.

This meant that millions of people were coming in contact with asbestos on a daily basis. And since the effects of exposure to asbestos fibre often don\’t become apparent for 30 or 40 years after prolonged exposure, companies and health officials were slow to recognize the dangers of asbestos. As a result, shipyard workers, men and women working in asbestos mines and mills, workers producing asbestos products, workers in the heating and construction industries, and virtually every other tradespeople were exposed to asbestos fibres for extended periods of time.

Today it is understood that anyone working with or near asbestos has an increased risk of developing mesothelioma, so there are strictly controlled limits of exposure in the work place. Nonetheless since the dormancy period of mesothelioma can often be 30 or 40 years, there are millions of workers who are at risk because of their exposure within the decades before the safety controls were put in place.

What are the symptoms of mesothelioma?

Pleural mesothelioma – cancer of the pleura or lung lining – causes shortness of breath or chronic coughing. Other symptoms of pleural mesothelioma may include chest pain, chronic coughing, shortness of breath, fatigue, wheezing, hoarseness, weight loss, or blood within the phlegm from the lungs when coughing.

Peritoneal mesothelioma affects the lining around the stomach and intestines and is generally just as harmful. Symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma include pain or swelling in the abdomen, weight loss, bowel obstruction, anemia, and fever.

Many of the symptoms of mesothelioma can very easily be mistaken for allergies or a common cold. Mesothelioma is often discovered when patients think they have one of these other common illnesses.

How Serious is Mesothelioma?

By the time most infected people become aware they have mesothelioma, it is no longer dormant and becomes extremely aggressive. In its active phase, mesothelioma can travel quickly, and is almost impossible to stop. There are treatments used to keep the patient comfortable, but there is currently no cure for mesothelioma. As many as 75% of those who develop the disease will lose their life within one year. The remainder might last for up to an additional six months.

This makes it extremely crucial to detect the disease before it enters its active phase.

How is mesothelioma diagnosed?

Mesothelioma is often not diagnosed until it reaches an advanced stage. This is because of its long dormancy period, and simply because once it becomes active the initial symptoms are similar to so much more common and less harmful sicknesses such as colds or the flu. If a patient has a history of exposure to asbestos, in that case a complete physical examination is recommended. This would normally include x-rays of the chest or abdomen and lung function tests. It might at the same time include a CT (or CAT) scan or an MRI. Both of these tests give detailed pictures of areas inside the body.

If these tests indicate the probability of mesothelioma, in that case it\’s required to perform a biopsy to confirm the diagnosis. Carrying out a biopsy involves an oncology specialist taking a small sample of affected tissue and examining it under a microscope for signs of malignancy. Depending on the location of the affected tissue, doing a biopsy could be a relatively straightforward procedure. It normally involves the insertion of a small instrument into the suspect cavity. These surgical devices have both viewing and sample taking capabilities. So the oncologist or surgeon can look at the cavity from the inside, and then take tissue samples from different areas.

If mesothelioma is discovered, the initial tests are followed up with what is called \”staging\”. This involves more tests to determine how far the disease has spread.

How is mesothelioma treated?

Standard treatments include the regular options available to cancer patients: surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy. At times, these treatments are combined. Should the mesothelioma is discovered at an early enough stage these treatments can sometimes be effective.

Among the treatments that are used in order to reduce the effects of the disease are oxygen, postural drainage and pain killers. Many alternative treatment methods are also being tested, including attempts to strengthen the body\’s immune system. Gene therapy is also being tested in an attempt to attack the problem at the DNA level. Other treatments being tried and tested include homeopathy, herbs and acupuncture. Unfortunately none of these have been found to be really effective once the disease reaches its aggressive stage.

As with all cancers, early detection is the best defense towards mesothelioma. Anybody who has been exposed to asbestos need to be alert for symptoms and contact a doctor immediately. Detecting mesothelioma at the earliest stage possible drastically increases the possibilities of beating the disease.

Mesothelioma: A Deadly Lung Cancer

Mesothelioma is a deadly cancer of the lungs and the abdominal cavities. Unlike other diseases, the cause of mesothelioma is not natural. In most of the cases, it is a cancer of lungs inflicted on the human beings by the modern economic factors, which are also credited to bring prosperity to the corporate world.

The disease has left many dead and many more fighting for the failing health. The common symptoms related to the disease are breathlessness, dry cough and pain in the respiratory tracts followed by vomiting. The prime Cause of mesothelioma is the exposure to asbestos.

Asbestos is a natural fibrous material that was widely used in various industries and building materials because of its stability and heat resistant properties. However, asbestos is also a deadly contaminant and responsible for serious diseases such as asbestosis, mesothelioma cancers and lung cancer. Most of the diseases are caused by inhalation of asbestos fibers that could settle in the internal body organs and cause serious diseases.

Mesothelioma and other asbestos related diseases can lie dormant in the body for decades before diagnosis. The worst part is that after diagnosis the patient has hardly any left for fighting these diseases.

Asbestos has extensively been mined in South Africa and exported to UK & US factories for reprocessing. For many years, the industrialists enjoyed the benefits of asbestos as a cheap substitute to wood in Building Material Industry and an integral part of Brake Lining material used extensively in vehicles during the World Wars. Asbestos was also widely used as an Insulation material in the buildings and industries in the US and Europe.

The victims of mesothelioma can file lawsuits for seeking compensation against the companies responsible for asbestos exposure. They can seek compensation for medical expenses, loss of income, lost earning capacity, pain and sufferings. The family members and relatives of the people who die because of mesothelioma cancers can also file lawsuits for compensation to recover the loss of consortium care. A dozen of companies who made an exit from the business decades ago are still fighting the huge compensation bills pending against them for causing a major biological disorder. The courts have ordered huge amounts as compensation in most of the mesothelioma lawsuits.

The Many Reasons To Use Electronic Cigarettes

Electronic cigarettes are the new product that smokers are switching to in mass, mainly because they believe it is a smarter alternative to smoking tobacco cigarettes. They still get the same sensation that they get from smoking tobacco cigarettes without thousands of harmful chemicals infiltrating their bodies and causing illness and disease according to some health professionals. Some are calling it a miracle product that eliminates the tar, secondhand smoke and many other undesired attributes that comes looking traditional tobacco cigarettes. Some health professionals are stating that the electronic cigarettes could virtually eliminate smoking related illnesses in a very short time if all current tobacco smokers would make the switch to the new electronic cigarette.

Most smokers are enjoying the convenience of using the product as well. One battery charge and one nicotine filter will generally last an average user all day. This means no lighting up a tobacco cigarette and no searching for a place to dump ashes or put out a butt because the electric cigarette does not use fire to operate the way tobacco cigarettes do. They like the fact that no vapor is produced at all unless they inhale from the e cigarette and that the vapor that does appear upon exhaling disappears almost instantly. They are able to use the product in their car, their home and in their work place without worry of annoying others with the smoke or smell.

Some might say that using an e cigarette is just too easy and it could be very easy to over use the device. This means that you might take in more nicotine than you used to. It is important to remember when you use your electronic cigarette, only use it for the amount of time that it would take you to smoke a traditional tobacco cigarette and then put it away until you would normally smoke another tobacco cigarette. This will help ensure that you do not increase your nicotine intake.

One sure way for the electronic cigarette user to remain safe from a nicotine overdose is to understand that seven puffs is the average amount puffs a smoker takes from a traditional cigarette. This means that they can seven puffs from electronic cigarette and simply putting it in your pocket, purse, or placing it on a desk or table is an easy way to protect from over usage. The next method is in the design of the electronic cigarette cartridge. Each cartridge produces the equivalent of a little less nicotine than the average pack of cigarettes. Smokers that smoke two packs of cigarettes a day should not use more than two cartridges in any given day. This alone will ultimately protect the user from nicotine overdose just by using common sense and simple first grade math.

It is still the best solution on the market for smokers in this day in age no matter how you look at it.

Dealing With Different Types of Colon Cancer

What is colon cancers survival rate? Many patients want to know their colon cancer prognosis. They may inquire the medical team addressing the specific case or search for statistics on their own. A prognosis gives an idea of the likely course and outcome of a disease. It also identifies the chance that a patient will recover or experience return of the cancer.

What is stage IV cancer of the colons survival rate? Stage 4 colon cancer refers to cancer that spread to nearby lymph nodes and other parts of the body, such as the liver or lungs. Another name for stage 4 colon cancer is Dukes’ D colon cancer. Generally, approximately 8-15% of people with stage 4 colon cancer are still alive five years after their diagnosis.

Darlene Kipling worked as a RN at CTCA giving chemotherapy and looking after patients. She never thought that one day she might be one of the patients to deal with the disease. In December 1993, she was diagnosed with colon cancer. The next year she had bowel resections. In 1996, a routine mammogram displayed a suspicious mass on the film which turned out to be malignant. She was once again treated. She is now many years out from colon and breast cancer. She is perfectly well and works full time as care manager.

Linda Fairchilds father died of colon cancer a month before she was diagnosed with the disease in 1995. She had surgery and chemotherapy. The first round of chemotherapy never made her lose her hair or have any severe side effects, although she did have some nausea.

Three years later blood tests came back abnormal signaling the return of the cancer. By the end of her second series of treatments, the tumor was no longer visible on scans and her blood tests were near normal. She continued to receive nutrition intravenously for the next three months, until her weight returned to normal.

Reishi Extract and Cancer

Reishi extract is commonly used in Oriental Medicine as almost a cure-all. Both medical practitioners and regular people use it for things as innocent as stress and the common cold to more serious afflictions like asthma and cancer.

One of the strongest proponents for the use of reishi as a medicinal mushroom is Dr. Fukumi Morishige. He works with the Linus Pauling Institute of Science & Medicine on treating cancer with reishi.

Re-printed in the Chinese Traditional Medicine Part III was a speech by Dr. Morishige that included the case studies listed below.

Growing up in Japan as Dr. Morishige did, it was impossible not to have heard of reishi. But he dismissed it as a mild herbal remedy to be used with limited results for non-terminal illnesses, not as a viable option for treating terminal conditions such as cancer. His curiosity arose when two of his cancer patients showed signs of remission, which they themselves claimed were due to their use of reishi.

First was a 39-year-old woman with lung carcinoma. The hospitals she had visited all told her she was too far gone and there was nothing they could do to help her. As a serious secondary complication, she also exhibited chest cavity edema. None-the-less, by the time she had her first appointment with Dr. Morishige, the symptoms of her illness had disappeared. The woman credited her recovery to the use of reishi, which her husband had administered to her at 4 grams per day.

The second case was a young boy suffering from congenital liver cancer. At the age of 5, his attending physician determined that the condition was terminal and discontinued any further treatment. At 9 years of age, the boy’s parents brought him to see Dr. Morishige who could then find no remaining traces of the cancer. The parents explained to Dr. Morishige that they had been feeding their son reishi via a naso-gastric tube. It was at this point Dr. Morishige determined that reishi’s effect on cancer deserved further study.

The following are five of his case studies using reishi and Vitamin C (for prevention of side effects):

Case 1: A patient with a 5 cm (2 in.) brain tumor who had lost consciousness was placed on 6 gm of reishi per day in June of ’86. By September, this 70-year-old-male patient had emerged from his comatose state. The reishi was decreased to 3 gm per day. Another three months later, December of 1986, scans showed diminishing size of the tumor. After it shrunk to 1 cm (0.4 in.), the hospital released the man to return home and live with his family.

Case 2: A 50-year-old woman who had lung cancer and was coughing up blood was put on 6 grams of reishi per day. After six months, the tumor had disappeared. At the onset of treatment, she was unable to climb stairs. At the end, she was able to climb stairs with little effort.

Case 3: Patient with breast cancer metastasized to bones was in excruciating pain and unable to move below the head. She was put initially on 9 gm of reishi per day, which was later increased to 20 gm/day. After two months she reported as pain free and was released from hospital after demonstrating progress in her ability to walk.

Case 4: A male patient with rectal cancer and liver metastasis began using 6 gm of reishi per day. After six months, CT scans showed diminished tumor size and patient demonstrated improved general health.

Case 5: A male patient aged 60 was diagnosed as having terminal pancreatic cancer and short life expectancy. Dr. Morishige placed him on 9 gm/day of reishi plus 30 gm/day of Vitamin C. A year later, the man was free of any symptoms and back working. After leaving the hospital, he continued taking 5 gm of reishi per day.

Note: This article is provided for informational purposes only. The product mentioned herein has not been approved by the FDA for use in treating cancer. Never use this or any other herb to treat a life-threatening disease without consulting a licensed physician.

We all need to understand a bit more exactly what cancer is, so feel free to read more about what is colon cancer. Get a totally unique version of this article from our article submission service
