Drinking Whilst Pregnant

Drinking one or two units of alcohol a week during pregnancy does not raise the risk of developmental problems in the child, a study has suggested. Official advice remains that women abstain completely during pregnancy. A study of more than 11,000 five-year-olds published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health found no evidence of harm.

A survey of 3000 people, by leading healthcare cash plan provider Medicash, has revealed that 17% of workers in small businesses feel so tense that they need a beer or a glass of wine to de-stress at the end of the day compared with only 8% of those in cosy corporate roles.

Those in small businesses are also 50% more likely to take time off work as a result of stress. But despite being exposed to higher stress levels, their employers aren\’t providing them with the support they need to cope.

The survey showed that employees in large organisations are twice as likely to have access to free or subsidised gym membership, telephone counselling and face to face counselling.

In fact, the children born to light drinkers appeared slightly less likely to suffer behavioural problems, and scored higher on cognitive tests, compared with women who stopped during pregnancy. Dr Yvonne Kelly, from UCL, said : \”There\’s now a growing body of robust evidence that there is no increase in developmental difficulties associated with light drinking during pregnancy.\”

Encouraging employees to take a preventative approach to their own health by putting initiatives in place to help them manage their stress levels is proven to have a positive effect on a company\’s bottom line.\’

Small business workers are more likely to claim that they have been bullied at work, while work worries cause sleepless nights for many with one in five claiming that they have trouble sleeping at least one night every week.

More than half those surveyed said that they had been driven to tears at work and twelve percent had even gone as far as quitting a job when the stress became too much to handle. Perhaps most worrying is the fact that almost a third of workers say that they bottle up their feelings because they don\’t want people to see that they are under pressure.

But Dr Tony Falconer, the president of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, said that while the \”safest choice\” was abstinence, the current evidence suggested that drinking one or two units, once or twice a week was acceptable. \”The key public health message, whether or not a woman is pregnant, is that light drinking is fine, but heavy and binge drinking should be avoided.\” BBC News

Self hypnosis is usually thought of as a person listening to an audio tape, mp3, or other mass-produced media, intended to induce a willingness to absorb suggestions centered around a specific topic such as weight loss, stop smoking, etc. Unfortunately, this kind of hypnosis is generally prepared by someone who has never met the person being hypnotized.

For example, if you sunburn easily, that last thing you want to hear about is a slow walk on a hot beach. In this case, the \”self\” in self hypnosis simply means that you listen to it by yourself. How do you incorporate self improvement to hypnosis? To be able to go about self improvement, there are certain aspects in you that should be addressed. Using hypnosis, the negative aspects that are serving as hindrances to improvement must be removed entirely.

A true self hypnosis would necessarily be designed and created by the very person who will ultimately use and benefit from it. 2. For every particular goal, you should implement fitting suggestions which means you have to convert your goals into specific instructions to your subconscious mind on how to achieve each goal you set.

3. Relax yourself. Use the first few minutes of your self hypnotic session to get as relaxed as possible. Try to forget all your problems.

4. Start your hypnotic initiation phase by saying and repeating out loud the hypnotic words you have chosen, thinking of these words or listening to a hypnotic tape or CD customized for your hypnotic needs.

Before you start up your self hypnotic exercises you should make a time schedule for it. Do your hypnotic sessions every day, five minutes a day is enough. Repeat your suggestions as often as possible during the day. Measure your progress. Are you closer to your goal now than you were before you started? Ask yourself.

Dove House Hospice – Helping To Break The Final Taboo Over Death

It has become a subject most people shy away from, fearing it as the final taboo in the same way Victorians regarded sex. However, society\’s reluctance to face up to the issue of death with children or support youngsters coping with bereavement and loss can unleash a raft of problems, causing considerable and lasting emotional trauma.

An important conference hosted by Dove House Hospice is now hoping to address these issues. It aims help anyone with regular contact with children to better emotionally support youngsters who have been bereaved.

Dove House Hospice\’s fifth international conference – Children and Loss: Time to Listen – will take place at Hull Truck Theatre on Friday, June 18. The hospice will draw on its considerable experience working with schools and other organisations to stage the latest conference as part of its public health programme.

The conference aims to guide schools, universities and other education providers, as well as those working with children in the wider community from the clergy to learning mentors and school support staff, to introduce issues surrounding death and dying, grief and loss at an earlier age, enabling them to support children when they need it most.

Nic MacManus, head of practise development at Dove House Hospice, believes society\’s reluctance to face up to individual mortality can have a negative impact on children, excluding them from the grieving process.

\”Often, it is adults who find it difficult to talk about death as they feel uncomfortable facing their own mortality,\” he says. \”Children would talk quite readily about it yet they are often excluded when a family experiences bereavement or loss.\”

\”In the past death was regarded as a normal part of family life. However, with more and more people dying in hospital, children are often shielded from bereavement in a misguided attempt to protect them from pain.\”

\”It\’s not so long ago that we would have had the corpse of the person who had died in our front rooms whilst funeral arrangements were made,\” he says. \”This may not have been the most hygienic of practices, but it did serve to make children aware of what had happened and include them in the experience of loss.\”

\”When looking at loss with regards to children, we are constantly trying to protect them. We want to shield them from things like disappointment and loss but, at some point, we all have to deal with these issues.\”

A parallel can be made with the \”goldfish test\”, says Nic. \”What do we do when a child\’s goldfish dies? We can either replace it with a new fish and keep quiet, or use the opportunity to discuss death in an open way. In our experience, children are usually open to speaking about death and we hope to make more people feel at ease when discussing loss with children.\”

\”Often, children are traumatised not by the death itself, but by the fears and anxieties they imagine to be connected with death. If we don\’t talk to children about their emotions, they could continue to be misinformed and believe things which aren\’t true; potentially causing much more damage.\”

\”By not giving them the information they need when they suffer loss, it can make it more difficult for them to deal with some of their emotions. We can tell them it\’s okay to feel angry or upset and that it\’s okay to talk about things. If we don\’t involve a child, it may be that they end up thinking something awful is happening to them because of the way they are feeling.\”

Attendees will gain insight into children\’s experiences of the death of the parent and how to help them tackle the life-changing event as well as understanding the importance of being proactive instead of reactive. Tackling death at an earlier age can help children understand their emotions and prevent negative behaviour which can emerge years later if a child is ignored or excluded from the grieving process. Those attending the conference will also be given the opportunity to tap into a valuable network of professionals, exchanging ideas on supporting children as they deal with overwhelming feelings of loss.

Speakers at the conference are to include Brenda Mallon, who is a counsellor and psychotherapist specialising in bereavement; team leader for Minority Ethnic Achievement at Hull\’s Children and Young People\’s Services, Sukhwant Kaur; and Alison Penny, co-ordinator of the Childhood Bereavement Network. Specific talks will include \”How you can help children and young people who experience loss\”, \”Grief matters for children in school\” and \”A child\’s perception of immigration from India to the UK\”, which discusses the issue of culture loss and the lack of sense of belonging caused by such a move.

What To Know About Becoming A Registered Massage Therapist In Canada

If one desires to become a Registered Massage Therapist in Ontario, Canada, one must complete twenty hundred hours of coursework in an educational setting. However, unlike the United States, Canadian provinces allow massage therapists to work across various provinces as long as one completes a secondary online training course in relation to such provincial requirements. Therefore, one may want to attend schooling in the area in which one lives and works, followed by additional training in other provinces as required.

In addition, one must be become a member of the new National Massage Therapy Alliance which has replaced the older provincial alliances in recent years. Although, each alliance requires therapists to complete coursework through a program which is affiliated by each province. As such, any therapist has to have graduated successfully from a school which is considered by the province as an affiliated and certified school in which to do so.

Although, as many students and individuals who have ever had a massage knows, when it comes to massage there are many different styles and techniques taught and used throughout the world. In Canada, one must complete training in a specialized area then continue to add on other areas once one is registered. Of course, after doing so, one is registered to provide at least one massage technique.

Such coursework can be obtained through one of a variety of programs offering training in body work, reiki, craniosacral therapy, reflexology, shiatsu and therapeutic touch. So, one may want to research which style of body work one is most interested in providing. Although, as there are many areas of specialized massage therapy, once registered most individuals continue training in other areas in order to provide a combination of services at some point in their career.

For, although massage therapy can be an excellent field, one must complete many hours of coursework to become a registered massage therapist. For example, in Ontario, the requirement is twenty two hundred hours of coursework, followed by continuing education before one can become registered. This is to help prevent individuals from working without a license and running the risk of a lawsuit against the organization with which one is registered.

Also, as of April 1, 2009, the Canadian First Ministers have declared that professions such as massage therapy be regulated and massage therapists be allowed to work across all provinces. Therefore, if one has trained in one province, chances are with a short online course and testing, one can work in all provinces within Canada. To this end, although one may want to attend training in their home area, one is no longer limited with regards to which provinces in which one can provide such services.

In addition, if one desires to become a registered massage therapist in Ontario for example, one can also work in other provinces as long as one has passed the online test and is certified to do so. Otherwise, one can get in great trouble for providing massage services for which one is not licensed or registered. To this end, if one is not a registered massage therapist in Canada, one may want to be cautious about offering such services.

As for costs, while nowhere near expensive as the United States, going to school in Canada for massage can be less expensive. However, federal funding is only allowed to those on the Canadian council. Therefore, one may want to save and study the different forms of massage to decide which one is most interested in before beginning such training.

In addition, one may want to attend a school which operates on a non-profit basis as fees range from $500 to $700. Whereas, in the neighboring United States, one can spend a great deal more money on such training. Therefore, it is a great profession for individuals living in Canada.

Therefore, although one may have to spend a great deal of time in training to become a massage therapist in Canada, it is something many decide to do. As, by becoming a registered massage therapist, one can retain their independence, work the hours which one desires to work and can help people in the process. Something, not a lot of other jobs available today seem to offer, especially with the recent economic downturn. To this end, massage therapy can be a great field to work in for the right person who desires to offer such healing services.

Nostalgia And Uk Food Market Growth

Nostalgic and ‘retro’ foods have helped drive continued sales value growth in the UK food and beverage market even as the country entered recession, according to a new report from Leatherhead Food Research.

The global movement toward comfort eating has grown as the economic climate has worsened and many food companies have sought to cash in on the trend by reintroducing discontinued product lines and expanding in categories like frozen foods and desserts.

Market research manager at Leatherhead Chris Brockman told FoodNavigator.com: “The nostalgia trend has intensified this year: People are going back to comfort foods and emotional eating. Canned foods have been doing quite well and sales of things like jellies and frozen desserts are performing well.”

Leatherhead’s UK Food and Drinks Report 2009 covers market information from 2004 to 2008, so although it reports three percent annual sales value growth during this time, the full effects of the recession may not yet be apparent.

“Clearly the recession intensified at the beginning of this year so the figures are likely to get worse,” said Brockman.

Comebacks

However, products that hark back to better times have proved popular with cash-strapped consumers.

Brockman gives the example of Birdseye’s Arctic Roll, a frozen dessert which was popular in the UK during the 1970s and 80s, but lost fans in the early 1990s, leading the company to discontinue the product. It was reintroduced in December.

In addition, he said that consumers are treating themselves to chocolate and confectionery products, even as they are choosing private label products and cutting back on non-food luxuries.

“People are trading down to own label versions but they are always buying treats as well. There is still quite a good market for that,” said Brockman. “We always say that chocolate does very well in a recession, and it has done.”

He said that Mars in particular has done well – and it has also tapped into the trend for nostalgia, by bringing back Treets, its brown-shelled chocolate-covered peanuts, for a limited time, even though it discontinued them in 1988.

Meanwhile, there are marked differences across Europe when it comes to which sections of the food and drink market are doing well.

For example, while the retail sales value of carbonated soft drinks increased in the UK by a modest 5.3 percent from 2004-2008, it shot up in Spain by 22.7 percent. And the sales value of ice cream fell by 10.9 percent in the UK during the period, while it grew by 7.1 percent in Italy.

Understanding How Speech Therapy Can Help

Elmer Fudd may get a laugh every time he hunts for that “wascally wabbit”, Bugs Bunny, but speech-language disorders are not laughing matters. It can be painful to not be understood or to be ridiculed for voice problems. It is estimated that 5% of school-age children have some type of language disorder. The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association breaks disorders into two types, speech disorders and language disorders.

Understanding Speech Disorders

When talking about speech disorders, the areas that normally are discussed are the following: articulation, stuttering, pitch problems, volume, slurred speech, and vocal quality.

Understanding Language Disorders

Language disorders are categorized as receptive or expressive. A receptive disorder occurs when there are problems understanding language, while expressive disorders make it difficult to put words together, develop vocabulary, use language appropriately. People with an expressive disorder have trouble saying what they want to say.

There Is Help Available

The best source of help is to contact a professional speech-language therapist. They have the training and knowledge to not only identify what the problems are, but they can use various testing methods to identify the communication problems.

What a Therapist May Do

One-on-One sessions are typical and will include the use of proven techniques that improve language, cognitive capabilities, and voice abilities. The therapist will typically use teaching methods that encourage and develop correct pronunciation. This is done through modeling, exercises, and repetition. For maximum value and success, it is good to start working with a therapist early and to continue until maximum results have been acquired.

Can You Help Me?

There are countless reasons that a speech and language problem may have developed. Even if your situation is not listed here, there may be a way for a speech therapist to help you. Just to get you an idea, here are some areas that a speech therapist will typically help: cleft palate, autism, deaf or partial hearing problems, learning disabilities and developmental delays, weak or under-developed oral muscles, and even brain injuries.

If you want to get started, Karen Barta is a Speech Therapist in Aurora, Colorado. She provides services to help with slurred speech and so much more!

Mind Map Software And Note Taking Strategies For Exam Revision

Definition of Mind Mapping

Mind Maps are used to represent information and ideas in a visual form that the mind finds easier to remember. A central image or theme is located at the centre of the Mind Map and topics and subtopics are arranged around that central theme or topic.

Mind Maps are considered one of the most effective note taking strategies and a number of different mind mapping software tools exist to facilitate the creation of mind maps.

Why use Mind Maps

Mind Mapping provides a quick method of generating new ideas, organizing and summarizing the information that matters and are much more efficient then normal notes when organizing information that you later want to review before an exam. They can also be used to facilitate creativity, decision making and problem solving.

When reviewing information for an exam being able to review your notes quickly is important. Reviewing the most important, relevant information is even more important and Mind Maps enable you to do this as the most important key topics are located nearer the centre. Mind Maps also make use of images which the mind finds easier to remember and these can be used to summarize important information. Also the mind is better able to recall the information when associations or connections are made between related information. Mind Maps make this much easier then normal linear note taking.

How to revise for exams using Mind Maps

It will be easier to recall information if you can build upon the knowledge you have already gained. Therefore create a Mind Map of what you already know of the subject or topic. When you build upon that knowledge you will be able to connect and associate new information with your existing knowledge.

First obtain a large sheet of paper or if you are using Mind Mapping Software draw or add a central image at the centre of the page. Make it stand out with colour. Then Create branches from that central image for the main subtopics related to that central topic. The main topics should be written in larger text and highlight the most important areas. Add sub-branches by creating more branches emanating from the main topics. These subtopics should contain more in depth information and keywords or short phrases summarizing key ideas that you can recall from memory. Try and see how the different sub-topics and elements are associated.

Linear note taking is monotonous and boring. The key information does not stand out, they take longer to write and do not provide a quick way of summarizing the important information needed for an exam. Mind Maps highlight the important information by placing it nearer the centre in larger writing with images that can quickly sum up a key idea or topic. Try and sum up information with a few words or even better 1 keyword or image. Use plenty of colour and images. Organize the information like this helps you to build associations and is very usefully when you want to recall information at a glance.

After you have recalled as much information as possible obtain the books that are most important for revision purposes. Flick through these books viewing the main chapter headings. Also take a look at the contents pages. Now speed read these books focusing in on the most important information and try and build upon what you already know. There is a common myth that speed reading significantly reduces comprehension and retention of information. Speed reading can actually increase retention of information as it enables you to gain a broader perspective of a subject or topic important for memory and can also help your mind piece together the information particularly when you come to read the information in more depth.

Now prioritise those books that provide the most valuable information when studying or revising and read them in greater depth.

Add more branches to your Mind Map and continue to add the key information after reading each section of the book. These keywords, images and phrases should sum up the main topics and subtopics.

Attempting to recall and write down what you have just read will greatly assist in reinforcing that information and will assist recall later by helping to absorb the information into your long term memory. It will also enable you to adjust your methods if you are finding it difficult to recall what you have just read.

Don’t forget to keep adding to your Mind Map after gaining knowledge that you consider important for the exam. Your Mind Map should become larger over time and more branches should be created moving even further from the central topic. Your Mind Map should become more detailed so make sure you use a large sheet of paper. If your using Mind Mapping Software you should add notes providing more in depth information if needed. Keep reviewing your Mind Map every few days to reinforce the information you have learned.

As you approach the exam you should be able to recall in detail the knowledge gained by glancing at your detailed Mind Map which should now contain a detailed summary of your entire subject or topic.

The images will greatly assist in recalling information at a glance and the Mind Map itself will help you to see how all the elements and sub-topics are associated and ordered. Also you will not have to read through loads of notes to get to the key information.

The mind can recall information much easier when it can visualise a subject from a broader perspective, can visualise how the different topics and sub-topics are ordered and connected. If you combine this with the power of images which give the mind more mental hooks to latch onto you have the most effective method for learning and recall.

If you think Mind Mapping could be useful to you consider www.creativemindmapping.com/ which provides a practical guide on how to Mind Map and a review of Mind Mapping Software applications now available

When the proper function of the biliary tree is hampered, a person becomes inflicted with jaundice. One of the most common effects of gallstones is an excruciating pain in the abdomen. Women are the most prone to this ailment. However, with some natural gallstone remedies, you can dissolve those pesky gallstones in no time.

Studies show that the formation of gallstones is caused one or more factors. This could be hereditary, environmental, or dietary. Perhaps one of the most common causes of gallstones is the ingestion of unhealthy salty food. To counter the development of gallstones within our body, a healthy diet therefore, is optimal.

Because gallstones can come from eating bad food that causes cholesterol, fats, salt, bile, water, bilirium, and protein to pile up, it make sense that there is a healthy and organic remedy. Here are a few all-natural, do-it-yourself remedies for gallstones.

Apple juice is an effective remedy for gallstone elimination. On the first two days, drink pure apple juice extracted directly from the fruit. It must be all natural apple juice. During the second night of the treatment, drink a concoction of freshly squeezed lemon and dark olive oil – 3 ounces each. Take a sip on the concoction every 20 minutes until it is finished. By the third day, a significant amount of the stones should be dissolved.

The Citrus Diet: Aside from consuming apples on a regular basis, you can also eat many varieties of vitamin C rich citruses to dissolve those gallstones. Since citrus fruits contain pectin, a substance that fights the formation of gallstones, they can help you get rid of your gallstones.

The Quebra Cadabra: As magical-sounding as its namesake, Quebra Pedra is perhaps one of thee best natural gallstone remedies. You can ingest it in tea form and it has an effective anti-spasmodic and anti-inflammatory property. Just take two teaspoons of this wonderful herb. Then dissolve it in 500ml of clean water and you are ready to go.

The Organic Salad Method: Going natural is the way to go if you want to get rid of gallstones organically. By consuming Turmeric, raw Beetroot juice, Radish, Lime, Grapefruit, Chamomile, and Cleavers tea on a regular basis, those sediment formations in your gallbladder will be gone in no time.

These remedies, though homemade, have been proven to relieve the pain of gallstones. Actually, many people who are prone to gallstones have found relief using natural methods. Seek profession medical help if symptoms don\’t subside. Remember that the best cure is actually prevention. A healthy lifestyle is the best gallstone preventative.

The dedicated staff at The Facial Place provide acne treatment, laser hair removal, facial laser skin treatment and many other Spa Oshawa products and services with a Registered massage therapist Ajax.
